The surviving humans escape, and he sits quietly waiting for death, knowing he saved humanity from extinction. The Marine manages to enter the infested starport, slay all the demons in his way and is able to shut down the force field. All of humanity's remaining soldiers make a desperate assault on the starport, but eventually they are decimated and only the player remains. However, the starport is the only way for the ships to depart and the demons have protected it with a force field.
With all the major cities of the world in ruins, the remaining leaders plan to use spacecraft to evacuate the survivors of Earth's population. He discovers that Earth has been invaded (as foreshadowed back in Doom I). It helped that a huge modding community started making new maps for it, and even total conversions.The player once again takes the role of a lone Marine, an unnamed hero, who, after escaping Hell and being the only survivor, returns to Earth. (Not the "official" storyline but pretty much all you need to know.) The game has an amazing "feel" that leads to people still playing it enthusiastically even today. You play as a space marine who needs to shoot up a bunch of demons and stuff. But just in case you've never played it before (play it now!) this game was revolutionary because of both its technical prowess and its amazing game design by a team of supremely talented developers at id Software.
Get it now, even if you've already played it. Even today, with increasingly sophisticated 3D action games DOOM's gameplay is classic. And for good reason! I admit, it scared the hell outta me when I first played it.
